Bio: Katia Horton

What brought you here to Sanctuary Aus?

I was looking for a role that could build on the strengths and skills I fostered throughout university and in my early career as a Disability Support Worker. From the first moment, I was confident Sanctuary Aus would be an organisation that would enable me to transition into this new chapter confidently and with excitement.

The continued opportunity for professional development and strengthening of our practice. Sanctuary Aus acknowledges this work can be very challenging at times and never fails to provide therapists with the support they need to best meet the needs of our clients.

What keeps you here at SA?

My absolute favourite part of my role is meeting new people on a regular basis. I believe work that exposes you to a wide variety of people from different backgrounds is invaluable to personal growth and social development. Second to that, I love that every day in this job looks different and that there’s never a dull moment. I thrive on being able to structure my weeks with what best fits my working style.

What do you like about your role?

During my time at University, I frequently volunteered at several St Vincent De Paul retail stores around Canberra. After graduating, I worked full-time as a Disability Support Worker from November 2020 to November 2022. During this time, I also worked casually as a Learning Support Assistant in numerous mainstream and specialist schools, as well as in the CYPS space as a family engagement worker. I was actively engaged in these up until my commencement at Sanctuary Aus in April 2023.

Your previous work experience

I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Canberra at the end of 2019. Since then, I have undertaken a short course in Auslan (Australian Sign Language) at the Canberra Institute of Technology and have taken part in numerous training opportunities, including, but not limited to, first aid and CRP, mental health first aid, disaster response, and NDIS worker modules.
