Position Description
Behaviour Support Therapist
Purpose of the Role: To provide clinical leadership to Sanctuary Aus, in terms of Behaviour Support for children and young people involved in the service, with a focus on undertaking assessment and planning with children and young people who are using behaviours of concern, through person-centred interventions to address the underlying causes of challenging behaviour concerns.
Organisational Environment: Sanctuary Aus Limited is a not-for-profit community owned and operated organisation for children, young people and families in the Canberra region. Sanctuary Aus responds to community needs within a safe and welcoming environment through our focus areas that provide a flexible range of activities, supports and information.
Sanctuary Aus works to address the many issues which can impact on a family’s capacity to raise their children in a healthy and caring environment, maximising the child’s capacity to develop and flourish in their home environment. Sanctuary Aus has three main arms to its services:
Individual and Family Therapy services;
Group work for children, young people, women and parents;
Disability services through the NDIS.
Sanctuary Aus strives to build a safe and therapeutic ‘community’ around our clients: providing a trauma-informed environment where clients and community are welcomed, with the goals of reducing their isolation and increasing their networks of support.
Key Responsibilities: As a Behaviour Support Therapist for Sanctuary Aus, your role is to support clients with challenging behaviours of concern to build the skills, relationships and motivation to use more positive and less destructive behaviours.
This will include, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities:
Building positive relationships with clients, their families and social and community networks to facilitation therapeutic interventions;
Develop thorough trauma-informed therapeutic assessments that analyse historical and current information on the client’s strengths, developmental needs and motivation, building a Plan to support the client to use more healthy behaviours.
To provide holistic and individualised therapeutic interventions for our clients, in line with the Plan developed to address their behaviours of concerns;
To build the resources of the client’s family and networks to develop their capacity to support the client in the future;
To work in a multi-disciplinary model with a range of allied health professionals to provide a holistic and integrated approach to supports.
To develop strong collaborative relationships with government and non-government service providers and contribute to the development of the Behaviour Support role in the disability sector.
To act as a leader, both within and external to Sanctuary Aus, in delivering Behaviour Support for those with disabilities and/or those with significant developmental delays due to exposure to trauma.
The Successful Applicant will have:
Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field (eg Psychology, Social Work, Speech Pathology, Occupational Therapy, Teaching, Nursing, etc.)
Extensive experience working with people with a disability who exhibit behaviours of concern’
Knowledge of the concepts and principles of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)
Understanding of the NDIS and the service delivery model
Driver's Licence and access to a reliable vehicle
Current Working with Vulnerable People clearance
Highly Desirable: Two Years demonstrated experience in the delivery of positive behaviour support
Delegated Authorities: The Behaviour Support Therapist will be a role model and provide leadership for best practice for Positive Behaviour Support within Sanctuary Aus and in the sector.
